Ransomware is a software commonly referred to as malware that malicious actors will use to intrude your network systems with a goal of encrypting all your files and holding you for ransom. Recently, major ransomware attacks such as WannaCry have spread globally, causing mass disruption of digital services and leading to outages. Some ransomware has been found to use government level exploits such as the NSA's infamous "EternalBlue."
Ransomware authors have a single goal in mind, they want to make money.
Example:
"Our team was tasked with investigating a ransomware incident at a major hospital, only to find that the ransom had already been paid. The hospital never did get to decrypt their machines, and the payment was never returned."
